Common Core Presentation

A parent-educator forum was held on Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00 in the school’s gymnasium to discuss the Common Core. A panel consisting of Dr. Dianna Roberge-Wentzell, Chief Academic Officer from the CT State Department of Education, Mrs. Marne Usher, CT PTA Education Committee Chairperson, and Executive Director of CT Association of Board of Education, Mr. Robert Rader were available for this event. The purpose of the forum was to provide a common understanding about the Common Core Standards, share how Bethany is addressing the Standards, and to allow for meaningful discussion about the implementation. The forum was well attended by both parents and faculty. Superintendent, Mr. John Barile and Curriculum Coordinator, Mrs. Maureen Galla presented a PowerPoint on the Common Core Standards. Following the presentation, attendees were encouraged to ask questions. Third Grade Publishing Project

 

As part of our third grade "Opinion Writing" unit, students wrote persuasive speeches expressing their opinion on a variety of topics. Students learned to keep their audience in mind as they wrote as well as begin with a big, bold thesis statement. They identified problems and wrote with a solution in mind. As a publishing project, students practiced reading their opinion pieces in front of an audience speaking clearly into a microphone.   They did an excellent job!

Bethany Girl Scout Book Drive

The Girl Scout book drive is finished and 430 books have been donated for Read to Grow!  The scouts sorted, organized, counted, and boxed the books for pick-up.  We want to sincerely thank all of the families who generously donated books for this organization.

PTO Opportunities:

 

The BCS PTO has Board positions open for the 2014-2015 academic year. We are accepting nominations for Vice President & Recording Secretary (a.m. & p.m. positions).  Below are descriptions of the positions. Nominations for the open positions close May 20, 2014. If you are interested becoming a part of this great organization or have any questions contact Pam Prinz at pammrs@gmail.com   Voting will take place at our regularly scheduled June 2nd PTO Meeting. Over 90% of our volunteers are parents who work outside the home, please consider joining their ranks!

 

Section 3: The Recording Secretary(ies) shall keep a record of all meetings of the organization and of the Board and shall perform such other duties as may be delegated to her/him.  Minutes will be forwarded to the PTO Webmaster for posting one week prior to their approval.

 

Section 6: The Vice-President(s) shall act as an aid to the President(s) and shall perform the duties of the President(s) in the absence of that officer(s).  The Vice-President(s) shall also be liaison to the Bethany Board of Education.  The Vice President shall attend no less than four (4) Bethany Board of Education meetings throughout the school year.  Unless otherwise requested by the PTO Board, the Vice President is free to choose which meetings he/she is able to attend.  The Vice-President is responsible for updating the PTO Board of Bethany Board of Education discussion points as well as relaying pertinent information and reviewing the minutes of the Bethany Board of Education meetings.  The Vice-President may designate a substitute to attend said meeting(s) as needed. 

 

Spring Fling Chair Person Needed:

 

Our annual spring Fling is need of a chair person(s).  This is one of many Family Fun Events that the PTO presents throughout the school year.  In the past it consisted of a family style cookout, games for the children, music, and a pie throwing event (buy a chance to throw a pie at the BCS teaching staff or administration).  You can keep the same format or make it your own. If interested in chairing this event contact Jen and Heather at bethanypto@gmail.com 

 

To do any of the PTO sponsored activities, we need volunteers who will make the commitment and step forward to chair.  There is a lot of support out there, take a chance, meet new people and most importantly of all, put a smile on a child's face- it just might be your own!

 

Box Tops for Education:  Please continue to send in Box tops that you have collected to school with your child. The money earned will be spent enhancing your children's BCS experience. We have raised $1,187.50 YTD from the Box Top Program. Thank you for your support! Keep those Box Tops Coming!

Summer Performing Arts Camp Instrumental

 

Bridgeport Bluefish seeking Singer

The Bridgeport Bluefish are seeking National Anthem, God Bless America, and Take Me Out to the Ballpark singers and musicians.  We would love for your students to try out to perform at the Ballpark.  Groups and individuals are welcomed to attend one of our three audition dates.   We will be holding the auditions at the Westfield Malls in Milford and Trumbull, and at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. 

 

Sat. 4/12 – Westfield Connecticut Post in Milford from 11 am to 3 pm

 

Sun. 4/13 – Westfield Trumbull from 11 am to 3 pm

 

Tues. 4/15 – The Ballpark at Harbor Yard from 4 to 7 pm
