BETHANY COMMUNITY NEWS
Read Across America
The Bethany Community School community joined schools across Connecticut and schools across the United States in celebration of “Read Across America Day” on Monday, March 3rd. Community leaders and special guests were invited to our school to celebrate and share their love of reading with all of our students. The Bethany community is dedicated to working together to create confident, caring and lifelong readers.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
This week Kindergarten celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday. They had fun with rhymes, made hats from his famous book The Cat and the Hat, and even tried green eggs and ham! It was an exciting week for kindergarten. Thank you Dr. Seuss! We enjoyed many of your books.
Jump Rope for Heart
On Friday, February 28, 2014, many smiles filled the BCS gymnasium as parents and children participated in our Jump Rope for Heart Event. Our students had a great time trying the various jumping challenges as well as spending time with their parents, friends, and teachers. Attendees visited with local health practitioners during the wellness fair, which ran in conjunction with this event. Families enjoyed food donated by Subway of Woodbridge and Bethany Brick Oven Pizza and of course, “Storm,” the Sound Tigers Mascot, was a huge hit with the children. Many thanks to all the teachers and parent volunteers who made this event a tremendous success for our BCS community.
BCS will be holding its fourth annual Invention Convention. For the past three months 50 students in grades 3-6 have been working hard on perfecting their inventions. On Friday, March 14th, they will be showcasing these inventions with the hopes of being one of our five candidates chosen to go on to the State of Connecticut Invention Convention in May. This event is open to the public and we encourage you to stop by and see the creative ideas our inventors have come up with to make everyday life a bit easier. Viewing time will take place in the BCS gymnasium from 9:00-11:30 and 12:00-1:30.
Leadership Council will be hosting our annual Shamrocks for Autism during the month of March, starting March 1st. Students have the opportunity to donate $1.00 towards this foundation and place their name on a shamrock which will hung throughout the school.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today. For additional information visit these websites: www.autism-society.org www.cdc.gov
